Dentistry has moved on a lot in recent years and it is no longer simply dental health, extractions and fillings being offered in many practices. Nowadays, people are turning to cosmetic dentistry, or 'aesthetic dentistry', as a way of improving their appearance, much as they would use cosmetic surgery. There are many treatments that can be used to straighten, lighten, reshape and repair teeth.
At Moira Cosmetic Dental Surgery we offer an extensive range of the most up-to-date Cosmetic treatments including veneers, crowns, bridges, tooth-coloured fillings, clear braces, implants and tooth whitening. There are so many different ways to improve your smile. If you are considering Cosmetic dentistry the best thing to do is to make an appointment to have a chat with us when we will discuss what you want to achieve with your smile. Then a thorough examination will determine the best way for you to achieve results and what treatment you are suitable for.
A dental implant is a titanium metal rod which is placed into the jawbone. A dental implant is essentially a substitute for a natural root and commonly it is screw or cylinder shaped. Each implant is placed into a socket carefully drilled at the precise location of the intended tooth. It is used to support one or more false teeth. In practice, both the false teeth and their supporting rod are known as 'implants'.
Implants are a well-established, tried-and-tested treatment. Over 95 per cent of modern implants should last for many years with the right care. It is possible to have any number of teeth replaced with implants. Placing the implants needs a small operation. This can be done using a simple local anaesthetic, and sometimes with sedation if you are very nervous. Once fitted, implants can provide support for crowns, bridges or partial dentures.

The clear alternative to braces. At Moira Cosmetic Dental Surgery we use Invisalign. Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners that are custom-molded to fit you. The virtually invisible aligners gradually reposition your
teeth into a smile you'll be proud of.
There are no metal wires or bands to irritate your mouth, and best of all, most people won't notice you're in treatment. Invisalign®, the clear alternative to braces, has been chosen by over 500,000 people who want beautiful smiles.
You can:
- Remove your aligners to eat, brush and floss
- Change aligners every two weeks
A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth, like a false fingernail fits over a nail. At Moira Cosmetic Dental Surgery we only offer veneers made from the finest quality porcelain, which results in a realistic, natural finish. Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the right colour to improve a single discoloured or stained tooth. A veneer can make a chipped tooth look intact again. The porcelain covers the whole of the front of the tooth with a thicker section replacing the broken part. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when orthodontics is not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it into line with the others. Veneers are a very popular way to create a 'Hollywood smile', and most of the perfect smiles we see on the faces of movie stars have been aided with Veneers as a result veneers are becoming a very popular treatment.
White fillings are an excellent way to improve the appearance of your smile. Fillings are common place in most people's mouths and traditional amalgam / silver coloured fillings are increasingly becoming a thing of the past. With time the materials that are used in white fillings are becoming increasingly reliable and stronger and as a result more teeth are suitable for white filings. If you need some fillings ask about making them white. Alternatively have all your old silver fillings replaced with tooth coloured fillings for an instant improvement to your smile.
Missing teeth don't just affect the appearance of your smile but missing teeth can put a strain on teeth at either side of the gap. A gap can affect your bite which in turn can cause pain and even gum disease. Bridges and Partial dentures are an excellent way to replace missing teeth.
A partial denture is a plate with a number of false teeth on it. It may be all plastic or a mixture of metal and plastic. Both types may have clips (clasps), to help keep the denture in place in the mouth. The main alternative to a partial denture is a fixed bridge.
A bridge is used when there are fewer teeth to replace, or when the missing teeth are only on one side of the mouth. This is made by putting crowns on the teeth at either side of the space, and then joining these two crowns together by placing a false tooth in the space. This is all made in the dental laboratory. The bridge can't be removed and this is why bridges prove to be a very popular way to replace missing teeth. However, Bridges are only possible if you have enough strong teeth with good bone support.
A crown is a restoration that fits over the remaining part of a prepared tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape of a natural tooth. A crown is sometimes known as a 'cap'. Crowns are an ideal restoration for teeth that have been broken, or have been weakened by decay or a very large filling. A crown could be used for a number of other reasons, for instance: you may have discoloured fillings and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth. You may have had a root filling which will need a crown to protect what is left of the tooth. it may help hold a bridge or denture firmly in place. At moira cosmetic dental surgery we offer metal and porcelain and metal free crowns.
